The app is running on an application server connected directly to the SQL server, but they are two separate boxes. Users access the app server remotely using terminal services. It should be noted that the SQL Server backend actually consists of two Compaq's that are clustered. I haven't heard very many good things about clustering - maybe we're getting bit by that...
