One thing which helped, sort of, was to have the admin (aka supervisor in novel3-ese) close some of the files on the user. This can be done by various tools, and then the app would crash with 1104 or 1105 (cannot read/write file).
Now while this could lead to a table crash, the usual workaround was to open and close the same tables from another workstation, after having done some small change in them (we'd usually add a period at the end of a comment somewhere) and making sure they're saved. That way the server was forced to flush the buffers.
