If you don't currently use code to build the grid, perhaps you might consider doing it. Apart from populating memos, there are other things you might eventually do in code.
I don't see the code part to be the greatest problem. The main problem with my solution is that, as soon as you set the .ControlSource to any expression, the column becomes R/O. This may or may not be acceptable, depending on the specific needs in a certain situation.
