Not really. It's called comparison. Now, if you'd like a thorough understanding on how Islam has always had internal struggles with its self-definition the references are quite easy to find. For example, the Shiite and Sunni 'factions' came from a dispute that arose immediately upon the death of Mohammed over which 'line' the next leader should arise from. They have been fighting and arguing amongst themselves ever since.
