I think Doug has answered you pretty much what I would have said

The difficulties seem to be based around different OS versions doing different things.. requiring different parameters.. producing files in different locations with differnt names etc.

On my machine (NT 4) it created a file called the name of the PC in my windows system folder with a .txt extension

If I was doing this I would think about using a base version that will perform the same way across all (win) platforms

and the only one (that I know of) that matches that criteria is the original MSD.exe

You can tell it (via a login scripts) to put it's file on f:\logfiles\< username >.txt
