Everyone I have talked to that took English in Junior High or High School has the same story. The English teacher would ask a few questions about the parts of speech and no one could answer them. At that point the teacher would announce, "you should have learned that last semester", and then not teach anything about English grammar.

I remember one of my Spanish teachers stating “there are nine exceptions in Spanish grammar, but in English there are exceptions to the exceptions”! How true!
