You should be able to connect using TCP/IP sockets as long as the TCP/IP netlib is installed at the (SQL) server. If you don't explicitly specify the netlib to use in the connection string (most people don't), Windows will use whatever has been configured for the target SQL Server (check the aliases section of the Client Network Utility) or the default for the machine (also in the Client Network Utility)
