I haven't found a limit yet and I have tested with over 5500 nodes so far (4500 first level nodes and then child nodes).

It sounds like you are violating the uniqueness of the Index. This is the 3rd parameter in the Nodes.Add method. If you specify a key value that already exists, it throws an error about an invalid key.
