The framework I use, Visual Extend, automatically uses filters in two cases:

  • Parent-child forms, as mentioned in my previous posting, to show all "children" for one "parent". However, they recommend using views, for efficiency reasons. I agree in principle, but I only start using views if the underlying table has more than 20,000 records.

  • There is a standard dialog that lets the user filter records in the form. Fields (or, rather, expressions) from the Grid Columns are automatically made available to the user, as expressions for the filter.
