I benefited from using calculations with complex numbers in Excel, for a subject "Electronic Circuit Analysis and Design" - but most people won't ever need complex numbers, for example.

They'd have to understand them first :). And even those who would understand simple complex algebra would get somewhat confused when it comes to complex functions...
