1.Its good that you have the soultion.
2.I think that your problems are quite common and probably in the moment a hundred developers problem fight against problem of numbering in sequenced way.
Maybe someday VFP or SQL Server will have field of sequence type with attributes like (reset on new month, first use skipped number etc.)
