In the form designer, select the grid, and then select the appropiate column in the properties window. (the grid should now have a blue outline)
Just click on the combo box in the form controls toolbar, then click in your selected column.

Also, try looking at the currentcontrol ,dynamiccurrentcontrol and sparse properties. They will help you with your grid building.
