In general, the Syntax Highlighter works only one line at a time.
This produces some weird results.
? 2;
will correctly show "6", but the Syntax Highlighter will interpret the second line as a comment.
Much more insidous, however, are the lines after comments which are NOT executed, although the S.H. says they should be - like the example you mentioned.
