>(And as far as folks that have all the language features down cold, it's usually at the expense of some other skill(s): eg. Data base design, project management, requirements gathering/analysis, etc.)

...or personality... :-0

Actually I'm serious about that one. This stereotype regarding developers is one that I've come to regard as mostly factual. Though many will argue (bring it on!) that it isn't true, there is a large difference between those who are comfortable with dealing with others (not just other programmers!) and those who are not. I have always enjoyed interviews and have been very at ease talking with people with various backgrounds and personalities, whereas I don't believe many do.

I have found myself in many roles in the last 15 years as a developer and one of the most valuable underlying factors that has helped me the most is being able to discuss whatever with anyone. Of course, there are times when I don't agree (you and I have had our moments) or just can't like someone, but they're pretty far and few between.

Technical knowledge is important. Understanding how to get things done is more important. Wrapping it all up in the ability to communicate with and enjoy the people who are involved in our business is the coup de grace. Though it didn't seem like it was a good thing at the time, maybe it helped that I did some sales years ago...
