John,
>To summarize your position on RV's is that if your application does not have to scale, RV's can work and be a good fit. Otherwise, SPT/SP would be a more powerful and flexible alternative.
I don't think it's that black and white. Even in a simple application that does not have to scale I would probably use SPT for getting report results. Since the performance of RVs have improved in SQL7 and up, I might also use RV is large project that have to scale.
The point i'm trying to stress is that RVs might have valid applications and might be preferable to some developers like me. Your concern that the solutions we make might hurt scalability is noted and respected. As I don't work too much with remote data nowadays, your advise is welcome. I will see in the future how this applies to my situation and will base my decisions on the facts I see at that moment. Therefore I can't blindly accept conclusions you make based on circumstances that don't apply to my project.
To come back on your question:
Q. Can I do everything in SPT that I can do in RV's?
A. Yes.
How about the Memo fetching ? How about FetchAsNeeded ?
Thanks for your insights
