I am working on upsizing (via re-write) a corporate records system. Up till now, I was planning on using SQL Server back-end but my funding has been cut to bare bones. For an independant this would mean moving on to the next client, but I am an employee and need to "make it work".

We will have to plan on 5000+ seats on LAN and WAN with connections running around 50-100 with a 200-300 peak. I am planning to use Visual Fox Express framework and will add some web access after first release.

Any comments on economical back-end options for a system of this size?
