You probly have VSS Set as Default Source Control Program.

Goto Tools | Options | Projects
And set Active Source Control Provider to

Also make sure you project file is not 'attached' to VSS
Click the project menu, and if you see a Source Control option, goto it, and then to Detach Project from Source Control
