We wore poppies when I was a kid, growing up in a small town in Alabama. Maybe the custom has faded in recent years, but I remember well the little old ladies knocking on doors and talking to people on the sidewalks downtown, offering them paper poppies for a small contribution.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet they're still at it in my hometown.
