Is there some limit on open files and the number of calls to other procedures that I can do from within that function? Any arrays and variables I'm using are released as soon as I'm done with them. So I can't see where this memory issue is coming from.

What is your OS? Phar Lap was the maker of a well-known DOS extender in the FPD days. What are your extended memory settings (XMS, DPMI)? Depending on the OS you might be able to experiment with a STACKS setting (e.g. STACKS=9,256) in CONFIG.SYS/.NT.
