Points well taken...
I guess that the differences in opinion stem from differences in readin habits. When I am catching up with a thread, I don't read each message, I go straight to the last one in each thread and read from top to bottom (or in Vlad and Jim Nelson's cases, bottom to top :-)). If someone has snipped, I then go back up to read the message that was snipped. This ends up being much quicker for me, because I can read the whole thread by only downloading one message. I have learned something from this thread, however, and that's that not all people do things like I do, and so a consensus won't be so easy to reach... and is probably a bad idea.
