Romania never was a former USSR republic, however, Moldova was. Currently it's an idependant country afrer USSR broke down. I'm not going to go in deep history (and, BTW, you're right: history and geography are my weakest part of education), but this is I know for sure. There were 15 republics in the former USSR and Moldova was one of them. Anyone from former USSR can support me in this statement.
