I know next to nill about firewall issues, however, I passed along your information to our network/security people and this was there response:

"No, you do not need a client. There is no client. Microsoft is only aware of Microsoft products and have absolutely no idea how other internet devices work and when they encounter non-MIcrosoft devices they tend to provide misleading information.

There are 2 possibilities: you are trying to directly communicate to the internet, which is not allowed since you must go through the proxy server, or you are trying to open up a port wich we do not allow access to the internet.

In the latter case, you must get your application to use proxy services. In the former case we would have to evaluate the security risks/benefits."
