We finally chased down the problem. One of the fields in the Access table was called 'GROUP' and, apparently, the Jett Engine parser was taking it as the reserved word 'group' (as in 'group by'), even though it was part of a string.

Have I mentioned my greatly increasing love for Access recently :)
