When you have time also check for a message similar to 'How can I get CLSID' created yesterday (Nov 15th,2001). There you'll find a summarized registry querying functions (3 of them open, close and query value).
Also read filer documentation. It's been a while I didn't check it but somewhere I read you could incorporate it in your apps (might be wrong). It's a high probability it already has many of the functions you want.
