What I consider a minimal laptop for development work is the Latitude C600, 14.1" display, WinXP Pro, 20 Gig drive, 256 MB RAM, CDROM, Network adapter. It came out to $2115. If you're just doing word processing, web surfing, etc, you can get away with less.

HP has some in that area for as little as 1200 (at least around here in CA). We got one at best buy for 1500 that has all those things (not XP pro, but XP home, which works just as well for development unless you need a web server, then add 199 for the pro upgrade).
