Yes, you're simplifying things a little bit :) I have an application called DataDict. This is quite complicated application with a user interface, which could be run with different parameters to perform various operations. It could be run independantly, but essentially each application here is called from the main application and none is used to run standalone, though practically all my applications work without JobControl too.

BTW, I'm still not certain, that ALTER TABLE command uses TMPFILES directory and not the path, where tables are stored. At least, the error message I got, indicated the opposite. Pity, that nobody from MS clearified this issue for me.

Anyway, we decided to forget this problem at all and leave everything as it is now (see my reply to Dragan in the other thread). So, as usual, too much time and energy spent to talk about the problem, but not to really solve it...
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
