A more drastic method would be to remove the column completely...
THISFORM.grd1.REMOVEOBJECT('Column1')
Of course you'd have to rebuild the grid to get it back... or use the ADDOBJECT method and reset the grid column's ColumnOrder properties...
THISFORM.grd1.ADDOBJECT('Column1',"Column")
THISFORM.grd1.Column1.ColumnOrder = 1
It does get rid of the thick vertical line though.
