THanks for the reply. I figured out as I sent the first message that the null was ther result of being at eof().

I am still puzzled about how I am getting there. There are no realtions set in the DE, set deleted is on, but there are 3500 hundred or so undeleted records and other than startup, navigation through the file is normal.
