>Hilmar,
>You do have a lot of reading to do.
>>Linux is NOT Unix<<, (its a comman misunderstanding ) they do share many of applications, and much of the the 'stuff' which has been developed for Unix, has been ported to Linux - ie. sendmail, c TCL and so on.
>

I have read this several times now, I don't completely agree with the argument. Let's forget about the windowing environment for a minute an say that we are in a Linux command prompt environment. How do I get around? By typing the same commands I can type in any unix os and/or environment. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck then.. well you know how that goes.

I can understand that the point is to differentiate among the other Unix OS', commercial vs open source but this seems to me a little exaggerated.

Commercial implementations of Unix all state that they are a unix-based OS. Is it really so bad for Linux to be thought of as a Unix flavor? To me that is exactly what it is, only a free one. (don't get me wrong, I like free too)

I am no Linux history buff, but wasn't the whole idea to release a free unix-based OS? Anyway, you will probably correct me on this one, so go easy on me :)

>Unix is commercial OS, which various companies own the source code on and have developed their own versions of ie HPUX (HP) AIX (IBM) Solarix (SUN) not to mention Att system V ..(forget who sells that now. )

>Whereas Linux was the brain child of Linux Torvalds in 1991... He and some other developers wrote it from the ground up got it working, and he released it and helped really start the Open Source community. Lots of great histoy by reading the who story. I am sure you can find it published.

>But is linux Good , Stable The answer is YES !
>some disagree about how good or stable compaired to Unix / in the various source. or flavors.
>now I am only talking about Linux as a server here, Not as a desktop enviorment product. - more on that later,
>But in my opinion... an thats all this is. here is how I would rate the stability.

>Windows NT server 5.5
>Linux 8.5
>Unix 9.0

>I run all three os's in my office, as servers, and this totally unscientific, un accounting rating, is based purly on how often I need to either fiddle with each, or reboot each server. How much time I spend with each.
>
>As far as a desktop, Linux - may or may not ever really take off , as a desktop enviorment, not that its bad, Actually I love it, but it appears to me to be just too powerful for the average home / office worker.
>
>The desktop enviroment has to have - as you know, a solid email client, a solid word processor, and spreadsheet app... not to mention a good database app, and a great browser. which all give similar look and feel to each other, similar keystrokes. What MS office gives the users..
>Some of that can be done quite nicley with Star Office, and quite frankly Opera as a browser is a great product... But they dont work together too well,
>
>but the up side to the Linux - desktop is most of the time, you can have many desktops loaded up at once. and switch back and forth. (woulnt you like to do that with windows ) But with linux you can.
>So like I said, good and bad. Uniform platform,... linux is not, stable it is, cost is better(Free)
