I agree about the embedded blank. Not sure I agree about the second part. In the old days, the kind of users you describe used to put everything into the application's root directory. E.g. all Excel files into the root directory of Excel, etc. At least now everything is in one place. Makes backups much easier. Additionally, a PC can be configured so that My Documents is called Files and located on another drive.

Also, in my experience, many users create subdirectories beneath My Documents. As long as there's a shortcut to get to My Documents (like in all common dialogs), I'm not sure the average user really has to know where that place is.
