Hi Mike,

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving!

>>I can see Microsoft's point but it seems to me to presume a sort of lowest common denominator type of thinking with respoect to user's intelligence.

Well, I'm not 100% in Tamar's camp, so to speak. I was pointing out that the latest "User's Experience" book from Microsoft recommends the My Documents folder and that was their standard.

>I can think of only one disadvantge to a My Documents special folder, and thats security and privacy. Viruses and hackers know where to go first when they wanna wipe you out. In a coporate environment, I don't think this is so much of an issue, in a properly administrated network. At home? Well, MS still has some work to do I think, but if a user wants to keep a document sensitive, they should learn how to do that (and its not all that hard anymore).

Well, my only 'gripe' with using the My Folders directory is that in many cases it can have a lot of files and I've noticed that when Windows Exploder <g> opens a directory with a lot of files it slows down. That counterbalances (in my mind anyway) the notion that using My Documents gives am advantage, speedwise. I understand that most folks won't have this trouble but I live in a fairly high production environment so in my case it's an issue.

Now, subdirectories under My Documents works for me - especially with the managemtn/backup issue. It's a real nightmare to manage a lot of computers and having a 'known' file storage location is a great idea. It just isn't a 100% solution IMO.

As far as having a space in a folder name.. I personally don't like it but recognize that I got my views about this in the days where this was an issue far greater then it is today. I'll also note that in my shop I have expressly forbidden using directory names with spaces in them. The only reason for that is having the issue of legacy code and the extra programming it requires us to think about. NBD really but a hassle in our case in particular.
Best,

DD
