And I agree most users will use Notepad - by default.
However, please consider:
1) It is good practice to accomodate users' preferences. If the user's preference (as expressed in Windows associations) is to open a text file in the Opera Web browser, in Microsoft Word, in WordPad, or in PFE, who am I to impose NotePad on them!
2) Depending on the users, you can actively recommend a better alternative to NotePad. For instance, if you do programs for the internal use of a single organization.
3) NotePad may not even be available - an user, angry with it, may have deleted it! Although this would admittedly not happen often.
