I believe, the error does not related to "scan" but to corrupted index file.
From VFP Help on "Record out of range" error:
"...The record number you attempted to access is beyond the actual number of records contained in the current table.
The current index does not match the table
Issue REINDEX on the table to try and correct the problem..."

So, reindex and see what will happen.
