I had seen this problem with edt's outside the grid and yes, making the rowheight larger solved it. I guess what perplexed me is that the same exact edt outside the grid worked fine, but inside the grid it wouldn't. Turns out that Sergey's suggestion of the borderstyle=0 and specialeffect=plain made it function correctly.
