Another alternative for SMTP is to use CDONTS. Works great and there's plenty of VFP code here for it from past threads.

Using SMTP doesn't require the overhead of having to setup Outlook or Outlook express on the workstation or server. All you really need is the mail server address (Eg. email.servername.com).
