Connection now works, and I was in fact using the 192.168... scheme... Again, being new to this type of setup, wasn't aware that these were common numbering systems for internal network IPs.

Came down this morning and go-figure, the lights were actually on this time. (may have been a fluke-cable... I'll check/replace as needed).
