Just had a quick play around, I didn't have any problems at all without H0 - I got the right colours.
So I thought, what's different here - the STYLE tags in the external file, so I put them in, & sure enough, I needed H0 to get the right colours. It seems if you don't include the STYLE tags, which aren't necessary, then you don't get the problem.
