I recall reading some works on metabolism which seem interesting. Seems they never take age into account though. Well, one work was stating how a person with an active metabolic rate can eat sugar and fat and it turns into energy. This is true as long as the person does not go outside a specific range of weight from his/her ideal. Once you go outside that range the sugar you ingest becomes body fat. The foods you eat are converted differently and the body suffers for it.

My diet has changed over the last 15 years or so. I watch what I eat but stress gets to me too often. Now I have to remove the excess weight and keep it off with diet and exercise. As you well know this is more than a challenge! It becomes a way of life for life!
