The problem with that is whatever is outside of the messages area is either accessible with or without login. Thus, without login, we have to come up with something. However, if we change the date format after you login, this would confuse people as the state of the list might change for some. We had that before and it generated some complains from users. Many were not understanding what was happening. We tried to troubleshoot and later found that the user was not even logged. So, it was created too much problems. Within the messages area, it is assumed as per your settings and combined with a login so there is no problem here.
