I agree with others... VFP7 is the way to go. It's a MUCH better development environment than VFP5.

The beginner's book you should get is the "Fundamentals" by Whil Hentzen at www.hentzenwerke.com. Hacker's Guide is a reference and will not really teach you how to develop VFP apps.
