This, however, isn't one of the controls that I've had a chance to play with (we use ccMail 6 and if you think MAPI is bad, try VIM). Anyway, as I've mentioned before, the controls I've worked with seem to do the job,

Right now, I have an executable at work that reads a text file downloaded from our website, processes registrations, and automatically emails the registrants a confirmation of registration. There are a couple of bugs in the control, but there are ways around them. Call and ask and you will get help.

Dana,

I think that you may have missed the target of my statement regarding lack of support. My comments were directed at Crescent Software, not Microsoft, and are based on first hand experience within the last 6 months or so.

We had purchased a copy of the Crescent Internet Toolpak with the idea of using its FTP control to download files from our mainframe. Previously, we had to purchase FTP Full for each workstation in order to do this.

Initially, our attempts to retrieve files weren't successful. While we got files alright, but they were garbage. In an attempt to find out what the problem was, I emailed the Crescent support people.

In describing the problem, I mentioned that was using VFP 5.0. The response that I got back said that they didn't support anything but VB. Fortunately, I was fluent enough in VB to reproduce the results using VB 5.0.

I emailed them back repeating the problem and stating that it was done in VB. I was told that I couldn't use the "high level" method, I had to use the "low level" method.

After some effort on my part (it didn't work like the documentation said it would), I finally got the results I wanted.

I emailed them back and included the code showing how to properly do it. Of course the code was VFP (Geo don't support VB :-)).

The point of all this is that ActiveX controls are supposed to be language independent. My problem with Crescent is that the only way I was able to get a response, was to do the additional work of translating it to VB. The only difference between my not getting support and getting it was the mention of VFP as opposed to VB in the text. Why couldn't they have mentioned the use of the "low level" method the first time?

I certainly can't speak for anyone else, but it certainly was annoying for me, and I'm sure it would have been for others. (The preceeding was cleaned up for everyone's benefit.)

I hope that this clarifies my position for you. In fairness to Crescent, if they changed the support policies, terrific. If they haven't, then they should, since it would be in their own best interest do so. The product (at least the FTP control) does the job and does it well.
