Well, you have a point and I may look into that as well but each method has its advantages and disadvantages. However I did find BRU tape backup which can be purchased for about $250.

I'm pretty sure that Linux will let you mount/unmount a device without rebooting (unlike Windnose). Throw in some TAR compression, a CRON job, and you've got a highly reliable backup.
