Sorry for slow reply (I was out of the country...)
You're correct, you need to create a separate cursor placeholder and use your function to populate that.
Eg
create cursor mycursor (mymemo m(4))
append blank
select a.*,myfunc() as lvalues,mycursor.mymemo from <mytable> into cursor mynewcursor
function myfunc()
replace mymemo with replicate("Z",rand()*2000) in mycursor
return .t.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
