Sorry for slow reply (I was out of the country...)

You're correct, you need to create a separate cursor placeholder and use your function to populate that.

Eg
create cursor mycursor (mymemo m(4))
append blank

select a.*,myfunc() as lvalues,mycursor.mymemo from <mytable> into cursor mynewcursor

function myfunc()
replace mymemo with replicate("Z",rand()*2000) in mycursor
return .t.
