John,
You might have replied to this type of message before, so sorry if I'm rehashing. The comment was made, by Rick Strahl I believe, that doing things on the desktop is much more difficult than it needs to be with .NET.
So I asked around and received a concurring opionion from several people. .NET is a great leep forward for designing web based solutions. And that, as you've stated previously, Web Services are only a part of what makes .NET so powerful. Asp.Net, Web Forms, the richness of the .NET framework, to name a few, add up to a very robust environment.
But that many people will continue to do desktop development in VFP, VB6, etc, because its clear the desktop version of .NET is a version 1 product.
Does this mean that you shouldn't learn what it takes to do desktop with .NET. I think not.
Is this the way you are leaning also?

>We're not talking about Desktops here, which is what changes with .NET. Now, we're talking about a server, and a device. Not always a PC.

>MS recognized that abandoning the desktop was a bad idea. The compelling story in VS .Net are windows forms. There was a distribution problem with windows apps. VS .Net solves a lot of that problem. Now, you will get the rich windows interface with the ease of distribution that a web-app enjoys..
