I think another point is more important here: the widespread use of alcohol. This makes it difficult, for many people, to admit that alcohol has the same status as other substances they consider bad. Also, it makes it difficult to outlaw alcohol (for drinking purposes; I know that both alcohol and other drugs have other uses, too).
