They are assumed (not universally believed) until they can find a way to test it. For example, the earth being flat was assumed until they could actually test it. When they did, what do you know, it wasn't. Meanwhile, those who strongly believed the earth was flat, stuck by that until they died. Sounds like fun.

A recent example of this is the Higgs Boson, in which Stephen Hawking wagered $100 with a leading American Physicist that it doesn't even exist. Only time well tell. Until it does, it is unreasonable to accept it as complete truth, or, in other words, believe.

I mostly agree. That is, however, no excuse to believe it.
