At the same time I am surprised and NOT! It even seems that some VERSIONS of Norton Antivirus cause these slowdowns wihle others do not. I wonder if other virus checkers (McAfee?) are any better...

We really can't be very efficient without virus software, because according to the latest statistics there is a new email virus let loose every 18 seconds (how do they know this?), not to mention viruses coming across the web.
