what about setting the controls 'enabled' property to 'FALSE'?
The user will not have 'access' to the control.
When the 'certain circumstance' occurs...

THISFORM.Control.Enabled = .f.

or

THISFORM.Control.ReadONly = .t. is another way to limit user access to a control.....
