OK, so what happened? You say it was ugly and give the comparison stats, but what happened at the Mac site? Where did the "ease of use" argument break down?

I would say that whatever starts stealing share from MS will never be able to do it in a "clamouring" fashion thanks to MS's monopoly on the desktop. It will be slow, but doesn't mean that it can't happen.
