I don't think anyone knows for sure.

WinXX users tend to visit sites powered by and featuring the WinXX platform. Linux users visit sites that favor Linux and are powered by Linux. Counts from those respective sites will show that. But, just because the IE count is low on Linux websites doesn't mean that WinXX isn't widely used. :)

All that can be done is to put an estimate on the limits. The number of Linux desktops is greater than 1, for sure, because botth I and my wife are running boxes that sport KDE. As a guesstimate on the upper limit I would say 10%, but that is debateable, of course. In order to defeat websites that have logic in them to abort displaying if non-IE browsers send replies I have Konqueror set to lie and say it is IE. A lot of folks running Linux spoof their platform setting in the various browsers that are available to Linux users. It is interesting to note that when Slashdot gives a reference to some other site that site is frequently 'Slashdotted', something that can happen if the number of login attempts exceeds the capacity of the site, or the site is not designed to take a large number of simultaneous logins. But, even popular sites have been Slashdotted, indicating there are a lot of folks out there who find Linux news interesting and many of them run Linux browsers. (That's not a true now as it used to be. A lot of Mircosurfs have discovered Slashdot. :)
